CORPORATE HISTORY
Founded in 1896 as Wm. B. Stewart & Sons, the Company acted as a sales consultant and agent for the textile industry. Still in business over 100 years later, The Stewart Group is very proud of its history and still follows its century old philosophy of representing reliable firms and manufacturing reliable products
In the 1920s, the Stewart Group acquired its first textile manufacturing
facility in Toronto, Ontario producing silk, cotton and synthetic yarns for
the wire and cable industries. This lead to a relationship with E.I Dupont
and the production of cellophane tear tapes for Cigarettes, chewing gums,
and candies. Soon afterward, new products were developed and additional
businesses were acquired in response to changing industry conditions and
market opportunities..
In the 1940s, the Stewart Group began supplying a wide variety of products to the telecommunications industry. The product line included marker yarns, binders, ripcords and core wraps, as well as shielding and waterblocking tapes.
In 1954 the Stewart Group became an early leader in the application of foam-backed fabrics. This business is still active today though its subsidiary Fabricushon located in Markham, Ontario, Canada. Fabricushon's principal products include branded and private label shoe foams and insoles, rubber carpet cushion for both commercial and residential and laminate underlayment. Fabricushon also provides other services such as perforating, die cutting, screen printing and also has full product development and R&D facilities.
In the mid-1980s, the Stewart Group's telecommunication business shifted to the manufacturing of glass-based cable reinforcements for the fiber optics industry. In May 1997, Owens Corning acquired the company's reinforcement business. The Stewart Group is still a major player in the Wire & Cable industry through its two North Carolina operations Stewart Technologies and Stewart Superabsorbents. At these subsidiaries we manufacture fiber optic cable filling compounds as well as process and distribute superabsorbent polymers (water blocking powders) for protecting wire & cable as well as other substrates.
In the late 1990's, utilizing its carpeting background, The Stewart Group patented a unique odor-destroying system called Odor-Ace™. Odor-Ace™ has positively addressed a strong consumer demand for products which can eliminate odors. We market these patented products through our subsidiary Fabri-Zyme under such brand names as Odor-Eaters™, STAINMASTER™ carpet cushion, Arm & Hammer® carpet cushion and Mohawk Forever Fresh™ carpet. This exciting technology has already influenced purchasers of floorcovering and other consumer products. Poised to enter several new markets to resolve odor issues, Fabri-Zyme is currently moving forward in related products which require odor elimination.
